Embodying Stories

Stories are interwoven into our experience of life: they are how we come to know ourselves and to know others, and they are also how others come to know us in turn. Joan Didion said: “We tell ourselves stories in order to live.”

We also tell ourselves stories in order to express what needs to be shared. Rather than suppressing, bypassing or turning away from what is real and present, our emotions, thoughts and values are a part of what it means to be human. Only in allowing ourselves to hold all of these and connect them in our bodies can we become free to express all of ourselves with new stories that move us into a future we want to belong to.

Kelsay has adapted this talk and interactive workshop for a wide range of audiences, including how to bring more creativity into entrepreneurship, become more courageous and embodied leaders, give shape to grief, or embody your own magic.

In each talk, she makes sure to provide:

  • Practices for reconnecting with creative expression through attunement, presence and centering

  • Self-inquiries and expressive arts exercises for the audience to continue their exploration after the talk

  • A model for how to be strong and vulnerable in sharing personal stories for larger social change

Creating Roots: Healing Ancestral Trauma through Objects, the Body and Persona

This talk is about the unique power each of us has to create and rebuild our roots, even if they have been severed or cutoff through trauma, abuse, neglect and betrayal. Kelsay explores the intricacies of identity construction and what it means to be human in a disconnected and AI saturated world. She focuses on the interplay of objects, persona and “the mythic self” and engages with theoretical frameworks such as dialogical self theory to examine personal symbols to illustrate the complex emotional states tied to memory, identity and personal history. By intertwining narrative elements with psychological concepts, this talk highlights the profound impact of both personal and cultural narratives on self-representation and identity formation.

Kelsay has given this talk for American literature, cultural theory, arts in society, and creative writing classes in higher education, at academic conferences and in transnational adoption communities. She especially loves adapting it for specific identity groups like the adoption constellation, LGBTQIA+, women, Asian American and communities of color.

In each talk, she makes sure to provide:

  • Practices to stay in an open, receptive and curious place and allow time to play with different personas

  • Tools to ground and center these parts, so they emerge in a safe and gentle way

  • How to clarify and embody what you stand for in the world and what ground you stand on
